Autumn Recruiting: Don't Wait For The New Year

Like many things in life, recruitment has its seasonal ups and downs. Peak times for filling vacancies, generally speaking, are January/February, late spring, and September. That’s not to say that there are no vacancies to fill at other times of the year, but many employers have a tendency to put off filling roles during the summer, and in the run-up to Christmas.

 

Why?

 

Let's take a look at some of the reasons why it's best to get that vacancy filled now instead of putting it off until the new year.

 

Maximise The Talent Pool

 

During a time when it's a candidate’s market for recruitment, you will have access to more talent in November and December than if you wait for the new year rush. Job seekers are setting the bar with regards to their expectations, so by diving into the talent pool now you will get the pick of the crop applying for your role.

 

Less Competition

 

Another great reason to recruit now is that once you’ve found your ideal candidate for the job you are less likely to be in a bidding war with other companies who may also want to secure the talents of your candidate. There's nothing worse than being a pawn in someone else's race to land their perfect role.

 

Recruit Now, Save Time

 

There are time benefits to be had too. Research has shown that recruiting in the new year can take approximately 1-2 weeks longer than recruiting in the pre-Christmas time frame. Generally, recruitment doesn't happen overnight so by waiting for the new year, realistically you may not have your new candidate start work until February or maybe even March at the earliest.

 

Max Out On Your Recruitment Budget

 

The end of the year is a prime time to maximise your recruitment budget. Social media tends to be more active during the winter months, so investing some of your budget into paid advertising on Facebook or LinkedIn could bring candidates your way that otherwise would never have seen your vacancy on a more traditional platform. You may even consider handing the entire process over to a professional to take the task on completely.

 

Hit The Ground Running In January

 

Once you've found your ideal candidate, getting them onboarded before the Christmas break has its benefits too. The onboarding process can take up to a month in some companies, so by getting your candidate ready to hit the ground running in January can only be a good thing. You may even want to welcome them to any social activities in the run up to Christmas so that your team can get to know each other in a relaxed sociable environment.
